From 2005: The Sustainability and Citizenship Networks of Porto Alegre and the story of Chocolatão

A four research effort was undertaken to document the resettlement of the informal settlement, Vila Chocolatão in Porto Alegre, Brazil that used a highly innovative, collaborative approach to uplift the community from poverty. It follows the use of the approach with other vulnerable communities, following the Chocolatão resettlement – Vila Santo Andre and Vila Santa Teresinha.

This innovation was led by a multi-sector network comprised of women community leaders and representatives of government, private sector and civil society who led a range of projects prior to resettlement. These projects included the creation of formal employment through a recycling cooperative, care and education for children, health. Building dignity, social inclusion, leadership and citizenship were the underlying aims of this many years of work.

The report is 102 pages in length and was developed between 2012 and 2016 and published in 2017. Follow this link to view The Sustainability and Citizenship Networks of Porto Alegre and the story of Chocolatão

Vania Gonçalves de Souza provided documents and ongoing reporting throughout the period of research. People Power (Part 3 of 4)

A documentaryTVEAP Films about how ordinary people hold elected governments and public officials accountable for decisions and actions. Periodically changing governments is necessary, but not sufficient. In a complex world, new models are needed. One approach is Participatory Democracy or Social Accountability. This is a relatively new kind of people power involving the use of information, participation, transparency and accountability to demonstrate how democracy and good governance can work for the common good. This film goes to four continents in search of groups already practising it. Porto Alegre is one of those cities, the city’s participatory budget system is featured.
